Peggy Brown's Biography:
A love for all things Hawaiian, Peggy Brown, a 40 year resident of the Big Island, recreates the tropics, sea life, people and deities of Hawaii with the sensitivity and brilliance of a kamaina who is well immersed in the island’s customs, culture and history.
“Kainaulu Mauka (Mountain Village) was inspired by the feather hunters of old Hawaii. These hunters where allowed to gather the brilliant red and yellow feathers for cloaks and head-dresses, (for the use of royalty) only during the molting season. They would go up into the mountains with their families and stay at a small hunting village for 4 to 6 weeks each year. Gathering of the feathers wasn’t easy, the birds had to be caught carefully, without damaging them. A few feathers were taken from each bird, then it would be released unharmed.
In 2003, as I worked this painting, it seemed to hold secrets in it’s shadows. The characters took on personalities and a story about these hunters and their families formed in my mind, leading to the creation of my first book: Mana Nui.
Part two, Mana’s Child, followed the next year. My husband Lanny is the sole reason for my happiness as well as all artistic endeavors and successes.”
PEKI (Peggy in Hawaiian) has painted dozens of portraits for graduations, weddings and baby luaus. Her landscapes and other Hawai’iana paintings have sold on the mainland and Asia as well as locally. Peggy also carves, wood burns and paints gourds, which, along with her original paintings and prints are available at the Outpost Gallery.
Peggy has also been a circle island tour guide for various companies and a Certified Helicopter Instructor: opening the first helicopter flight school on the island in 1991. Lanny and Peggy Brown currently own and operate Ka’u Palm, Plants & Craft in Ocean View. Call 939-8649.
